From  On Organization by Camatte

For me, communism is summed-up by these two:

  1. Jacques Camatte, a Italian, yet French, communist who left Marxist theory (and the Programme) to provide the theory behind Green Anarchy
  2. My study of the Occupy Wall Street that hypothesized the existance of problem that, in the end, turned out to be something I never heard of: the (socratic/platonic/hegelian) dialectic that is actually both the basis for communism (Trotsky/Hegel) and capital (Adam Smith, Hegel's economist)

To honor Camatte's brilliance, I wrote a semi-humorous article in my Occupy/Dialectic blog , and also created a worksheet to deconstruct, and reconstruct, his brave contradiction that I have made available for any to edit (on google drive): CLICK to EDIT.  Many more of his ideas are available there.

Camatte's exit was brilliant: he blamed organization with its theoretical elite that decays (always) to racketeering, but stresses the need for organization and theory (most say Marx predicted anarchy as the result of successful communism).

This is my Camatte story: Since the mid-80s, I have kept sleeved notebooks of art and booklets from action. In one is On Organization by Camatte. For a tiny booklet, it is thick; I never read it, but it was always there.

As I worked on it, I became even more impressed, seeing, in its universal meaning with Marx as some sort of St. Nick! Especially memorable are the words suggesting that the revolutionary carry his or her theory and not rely groups. In fact, "the group" gets low rating with a suggestion that it eventually tends to "racketeering."

Quickly reading through it, I found the heart of it near the end.  From only two paragraphs, I (de)constructed this "poem" (perhaps what was meant when the band, the Who, said when "we won't get fooled again").  Indented italics are my attempt to connect the individual ideas.




organization is the key problem

    to create

politico-statist process

    so that

overthrow of one existence

    does not lead to

the affirmation of another



one must remain on the ground of the critique of political economy

     because it is

vital that the revolution no longer become

merely a discourse on value in the second degree

     for

those who defend their ideologizing, pretending to achieve science, and founding epistemology



economy reduces politics (ancient art of organization)

     to a

epiphenomenon of its real process

     through the

"occult" power of the society of capital



     it


lets it survive as the museum of horrors such as parliament or the parties and groups

     where

science is in fact a discourse on the profitability of concepts and their effectiveness in the

production process of consciousness



theories of the workers' movement have grasped this social process in order to mystify it

     so that the

distinction between ideology and the social mode of production is destroyed



capital is no longer seen as a social mode of production and life but as a mode of management

    where

absolute subordination and the insertion of the state as a particular moment of the process



Science having been incorporated in the production process

inside the workers' movement

     becomes

merely bracket the real being of capital as value in process

     to

affirm the centrality of

     the

existence of capital as an affirmation of communism

     as a

epiphenomena theorized as the supreme phase

     of

state capitalism, bureaucratic, etc, , new phase, etc



totality of social life

     becomes a

reduction of it to a means of the production process

     where the

quantitative preponderance of the new middle classes

     becomes a

generic sea of the "working population"

having neither subject nor object

subject as far as the proletariat in the field of the great development of capital diminishes

object to the extent that exchange value as an abstract object in a material being (Grundrisse) escaped from all immediate self-determination



society of capital makes itself appear superficially divided into fields that are

apparently opposed

"fields of research"

     that

gives rise to

separate descriptions

     such as

sociology, economics, psychology

mystifying the unified reality, totality, created by value

     so that it

escapes the everyday means of perception and criticism by its autonomization



"critical theory" raising up of one or other sector

     only succeeds in

reducing itself to its own autonomization
